The (vintage) cycling event on Sylt
The Route
The starting point of the tour is the promenade in Wenningstedt-Braderup. From there we head south on the cycle path along the dune. With a bit of luck, even with the warming Sylt sun on your face. The route runs through the island metropolis of Westerland and on to Rantum. To the east, on the Hörnum outbound journey, stretches the Wadden Sea, known and protected as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. To the west is the North Sea, which can cause quite a few waves depending on the wind direction. Passing the legendary Samoa and Sansibar restaurants, we reach Hörnum, where the first refreshment point awaits. From Rantum it goes along the harbor and Rantum basin through rural Archsum and Morsum to the captain’s village of Keitum. Past traditional Frisian houses, geese and galloways around the easternmost tip of the island. Sylt continues to be circled on the most beautiful paths in front of a breathtaking backdrop of meadows and mudflats. At the Keitum Church of St. Severin, the Cycling Paradise Route now continues via Munkmarsch and Barderup towards Kampen.
Tour around Sylt
All participants will cycle surrounded by heath and natural landscapes all the way to List. On the way there it is worth looking out for the well-known shifting dunes. The northernmost island village is explored counterclockwise along the harbor and the Weststrandhalle, before heading along the historic island railway line past Klappholttal to the home straight to the restaurant Sturmhaube. There the participants receive a drink and a desert.
Requirements from 2023
What is a vintage bike anyway?
The older, the better! For our ride, this meant all bikes built before 1990 and older. Everything that is modern should not be on it. For example, clipless pedals, brake/shift lever combinations or motorized drives.
Where can you find a vintage bike?
Vintage bikes are currently available in all price ranges. From the mass-produced goods of the time to classic collector’s items.
Vintage bikes are often offered on Ebay at affordable prices, but they usually have to be refurbished. If you are not a mechanic, there are also many specialized online stores. In large cities, you can find inspiration and advice in vintage bike stores. We have already selected a few addresses for you here.
But maybe you still have an old bike in the garage?
Then it’s time to get it out and spruce it up. The recommended contacts will also help you with this.
What size frame do you have?
The size calculator at Steel-Vintage.com can answer this question for you. Here you will find a guide to determining your frame size. Because for a vintage bike to be really fun, the frame size should definitely be right.
